Introduction

Mark is a 38-year-old grandfather and father of five children. His granddaughter had just been born before my shot. Five years ago, he was a staff in a financial company and got tired of the nine-to-five, mechanized, repetitive and stressful life. He sold the house they were living in and bought a second-hand truck, then modified it to a lovely van home. From then on, he took his wife and four children, regardless of his parents' opposition, to embark on a van life around Europe. He relies on investment in the bank and seasonal jobs to support the entire family cost for their journey now. He said, "Now, we live a free and happy life. My children are lively, good at expressing, open-minded and talented on music. We don't have to work for others. We live for ourselves." Another permanent van dweller, Jonny Bush, he is 25 years old and has lived in this van for 2years. He has just graduated from the University of Canterbury learned architecture, so he designed the interior of the van all by himself. Because he could not afford the high rent, living in a van can save a large amount of money every month. He also used his van as his degree project. He said that his situation has caused the university to list him as "cause of concern", but later through his efforts and his continuous application, the school allowed him to park on the campus.

When Mark first took his children to live in Sweden, local laws forced children to go to nurseries and schools. This incident inspired him to create the "Family Protection" foundation, advocating homeschooling, and against mandatory early childhood education. In the contrast, I talked about education with Jonny, he said, it was education that gave him the ability to live like this, so he was challenging back to the traditional stereotypes and stubborn educational concepts. He does not support the concept of homeschooling, because in his view, children who are grown up in this environment since childhood, will be out of touch with outside advanced society.

In fact, there is still a long way to accomplish this photographic project. There are still many stories about van dwellers, and more and more thoughts and social values could be found in this group of people. This society should give those free-willing intellectual van dwellers much more tolerance and space to let them lead their own life.
